Sustainable and innovative design idea?
Since 2012, particularly outstanding, aesthetically valuable and ecologically credible products, services and concepts have been awarded the Federal Ecodesign Prize. Now it is time again: the Open Call Federal Award Ecodesign 2019 has started! Applications can be submitted until April 8th.
Prof. Friederike von Wedel-Parlow again is part of the jury for fashion design.

FashionSustain Thinkathon
17.02. - 18.02.2018 Kraftwerk Berlin
Within the framework of the Berlin Fashion Week 2018, the old Kraftwerk Berlin became the largest green hub for fair fashion and sustainable lifestyle in Europe with the two trade visitor fairs Greenshowroom & Ethical Fashion Show Behind the scenes, a two-day thinkathon took place during which 28 lateral thinkers from different scientific, economic and creative fields dealt with the textile of the future ("Stoff der Zukunft").
Prof. Friederike von Wedel-Parlow war Teil des „Green Teams“ für die Fashion Council Challenge unter dem Motto: "How can we innovate education and mentorship, so that designers can embrase new sustainable technologies?“ In ihrer Präsentation schlug das Team eine kuratierte Austauschplattform vor, welche der Modeausbildung als Katalysator für Innovation und Talent dienen soll.

Bundespreis Ecodesign 2017

How products and services affect the environment is largely determined by their design. The Bundespreis Ecodesign honors sustainable and outstandingly designed products, services and concepts. Out of a total of 324 entries from the fields of architecture, energy, nutrition, household, interior design, mobility and fashion, 129 entries made it to the second round of the competition after a pre-selection process and were presented to the jury for the Federal Prize Ecodesign on September 11, 2017 at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin.
The interdisciplinary jury, of which Friederike von Wedel-Parlow has been a member since 2015, nominated a total of twenty entries, seven of which were honored at the festive awards ceremony on November 27, 2017, at the Federal Ministry of the Environment.
"The applications range from small objects such as simple and beautiful LED spotlights to great visions of building with trees. We need such an abundance of ideas to make our production and consumption habits more environmentally friendly".

Category Young Talents
The Federal Prize Ecodesign Young Talents 2017 was awarded to a project on recyclable fashion. The category Young Talents brings together projects from all design sectors and offers a look at innovative, forward-looking projects. The prizes for young designers are endowed with one thousand euros each.
The fashion collection "DfC x JNJ" from Ina Budde convinces not only through the consistent, design-oriented circularity approach, but also through intelligent communication solutions and the underlying EXTENDED CLOSED LOOP model. The goal is better networking within the fashion industry and the expansion of return structures and offers for multiple use. Each garment in the collection is provided with a scannable label that, among other things, makes the material composition visible to customers and recycling companies and provides information about leasing and return options.
"Sustainability is not only intelligently solved here on the level of materiality - for example with the innovative, biodegradable products of the Lauffenmühle company - but the fashion system itself is considered as a whole: QR codes on the labels ensure transparency and traceability, second uses as second-hand or leasing models are propagated. This approach is to be applied as a start-up design agency with JAN 'N JUNE or other young labels."

Circular Fashion - How can we close the loop?

The Swedish Embassy regularly organizes events on sustainable fashion. For the start of the Berlin Fashion Week Summer 2017, the Swedish Embassy, together with the hessnatur Stiftung in die Nordischen Botschaften ein. Zusammen mit Experten und Pionieren für Circular Fashion aus der Mode- und Textilbranche wurde zum Thema Thema „Circular Fashion - How can we close the loop?” diskutiert.
Friederike von Wedel-Parlow was joined by Adrian Zethraeus (Re: textile), Jesper Danielsson (Houdini Sportswear), Ina Budde (ESMOD Berlin), Achim Lohrie (Tchibo GmbH) and Jan Borghardt (Eton AB).

OSCEdays 2017

Each year, the OSCEdays offer a place to experiment, share and implement concrete solutions for the transition to a global, sustainable recycling economy. This year's OSCE Days Berlin focused on the development process of "recyclable" products.
Prof. Friederike von Wedel-Parlow gave a lecture on Friday, 30 June 2017 on the topic "Beneficial Design - Design with a positive agenda".
Quality - a new definition of sustainability

Qualität als Begriff wird grundsätzlich positiv verstanden. Er bedeutet heute so viel mehr als die Machart oder Performance eines Produkts: ökologische und soziale Qualität ist gleichbedeutend mit der Herstellungsqualität und Haltbarkeit eines Produkts. Der Begriff „Nachhaltigkeit“ kann sich damit langsam verabschieden.

Fashion Made Fair
In "Fashion Made Fair" porträtieren Ellen Köhrer and Magdalena Schaffrin 33 Designer und Labels weltweit, die das Thema nachhaltige Mode auf unterschiedliche Weise interpretieren: von Upcycling-Designer, die mit Textilabfällen Kleidung herstellen und somit Rohstoffe und Energie sparen über Labels, welche traditionelle Handwerkskünste wieder entdecken bis zu Geschäftsmodellen, welche den Konsumenten miteinbeziehen, indem die Kleidung geleast oder recycelt wird. Allen gemeinsam sind faire Arbeitsbedingungen.
Neben ausgewählten Designern und Marken, geben Experteninterviews, darunter auch Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart (Leuphana-Universität Lüneburg, Gründer und wissenschaftlicher Geschäftsführer von EPEA, Mitbegründer des Cradle-to-Cradle Designkonzeptes) zusammen mit Friederike von Wedel-Parlow , einen Einblick in verschiedene Ansätze, wie die Modeindustrie ökologischer und sozialer gestaltet werden kann.
